What Is Pack Burro Racing?

Legend has it that pack burro racing began when two miners discovered gold in the same spot and had to race back to the claims office—on foot, leading their supply-laden burros. Today, this tradition lives on as competitors run alongside their burros (no riding allowed!) through challenging mountain terrain. Each burro carries authentic mining equipment including a pick, shovel, and gold pan, just like the prospectors of old.

Idaho Springs Pack Burro Race – Sunday, May 25, 2025

Check-in: 8:30 AM | Start: 10:30 AM | Distance: 5-6 miles | Entry: $60

Perfect for first-timers! The race begins with a rolling start following a parade down historic Miner Street, then winds through Virginia Canyon with a memorable 12% grade climb. Location: Citizens Park, Idaho Springs, CO (I-70 Exit 240)
